  • More Kofi … and Derek needed

    By Junglewalker
Like others here I'm a great admirer of Derek's work over the years . His talent is extraordinary . The same is true of Kofi Burbridge who is among my very favourite all round musicians … & I'm a guitar player . I have everything that Susan has released too & she is wonderful but …. by the end of this disc and their others together I begin to feel .. actually after a couple of tracks .. that Susan's soulful blues belting is a bit tiresome .. the same four or five notes … same bluesy phrasing on everything just about . A major exception was Midnight In Harlem ( great composition Mike M ) and there are a few moments here and there on this disc . On one track I wondered if Doyle B had written and produced and played .. there was a nice sort of Derek & The D's flavour to the texture of the guitars …. nice one Doyle . I wonder how many have heard Derek play with Jimmy Herring .. or Jack Pearson .. I love to hear Derek with another guitarist ( esp those two ) because their presence seems to lift him even higher . Kofi has the same effect when he is given some space to contribute & its really missed here … by me anyway . He ( Kofi ) is so phenomenally under rated and under utilised … the relief when he gets his flute out and plays those magical musical lines that he conjures up … but you have to wait until the very last track here . His odd flourishes of keyboard are generally noteworthy .. some lovely organ playing … just not enough . My favourite playing from Derek on the album is actually non slide playing but then I have always loved his non slide playing . Anybody hear The Allmans with Jack & Derek doing Statesboro …. Jack playing slide and Derek on soaring inventive post Duane Allman fabulous guitar …. wow …. or the two duetting on Southboud with sax player Ron Holloway …. So … all in all ; yes , I enjoy this outing of course . If you're a fan of Susan's vocal delivery you will be in heaven . I miss Derek opening up and stretching himself ; I miss Kofi .. who is a fabulous composer too ( my favourite tracks on Jimmy Herring's Lifeboat were his and one …. Only When Its Light .. is maybe the most joyful fabulous fusion esque musically satisfying since I don't know when ) . The material here is a bit disappointing on first listen . I hope they have huge success and that is enables Derek to explore his less commercial side …. please get some Jack & Jimmy & Kofi in there with you Derek ! But thanks guys and girls …. you are all wonderful !
  • Sheer quality

Don't let the negative reviews put you off buying this album!. My album of the year so far - band tighter than ever and Susan's never sounded so good.
  • Blues & Soul to perfection

    By The Smurf
A wonderful album of pure soulful music, in as many different styles as there are members of the band. This band just gets better and better and the Blues is very much alive and well in this groups capable hands. Derek Trucks ethereal slide Gibson SG just provides the icing on the cake. For lovers of modern blues, and vintage soul.
  • Mediocre

I'm a massive fan of Trucks and Tedeschi I have all their solo albums and Revelator which are fantastic, this however, isn't,- It's bland, uninspiring, unoriginal and .mediocre. IMO there isn't enough of Trucks on here, he's an awesome musician but sadly he doesn't feature prominently enough on this album
